Moche Textiles: Their Value and Role in North Coast Communities

Wednesday
October 9, 2024
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Come and join us in our next Conservation in Action installment with Guest Speaker, Dr. Arabel Fernandez Lopez! Dr. Fernandez Lopez's current research on Moche textiles has opened a series of new perspectives on their historical developments, their influence on other ceramics and mural art, and the integration of attributes corresponding to different styles. As in other traditions, Moche textiles—through their distinctive technical-stylistic attributes—gave rise to textile systems as transmitters of diverse messages.

Why is this work important to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science?

The work of Dr. Fernandez Lopez is directly impactful here at DMNS because it supports the work of the Avenir Conservation Center Textile Project: Archaeological, Historical, and Contemporary Textiles of the Americas. The museum’s collection of textiles and weaving implements provides a unique opportunity to better understand the histories of material, technical, and symbolic exchanges linking South, Central, and North America throughout history. Through weavings, this project will develop new ways of conceptualizing globalization, the perceived distinctions between art and craft, and the productive relationship between conservation, curation, and originating and descendant communities.

Doors and cash bar open at 6:30 PM - we can't wait to see you at the Museum.
